Acupuncture is a manual therapy that can help a wide variety of conditions/concerns. It is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has its own system of diagnosis and treatment strategies. Never had acupuncture before? New things can be intimidating, especially when needles are involved. To put your mind at ease, here is what you can expect at your initial acupuncture consultation.

Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Starting a new treatment can feel unfamiliar, especially if it is your first time trying acupuncture. This page will walk you through what to expect at your first acupuncture appointment so you can arrive feeling informed and comfortable.

Your first visit, or initial consultation, is designed to help your practitioner understand your health history, current concerns, and treatment goals. It also gives you time to ask questions and learn more about how acupuncture may support your health.

Before Your Appointment

You will likely receive an intake and health history form when you book your appointment. If possible, please complete it before your first visit. This helps us make the most of your appointment time and allows us to focus more fully on your assessment and treatment.

If you are unable to finish the form in advance, you may still complete it at the clinic. However, filling it out ahead of time is always recommended whenever possible.

What Happens at the First Visit

At your first appointment, your acupuncturist will review your intake form with you and ask follow-up questions about your concerns, symptoms, and health goals. This conversation helps create a clearer picture of what is going on and how acupuncture may be able to help.

Your practitioner may ask about:

  • Your main concern or reason for visiting.
  • How long the concern has been present.
  • What makes it better or worse.
  • Your sleep, digestion, energy, stress, and other general health patterns.
  • What you hope to achieve through treatment.

This part of the appointment is an important foundation for creating a personalized treatment plan.

Traditional Diagnostic Assessment

Depending on the nature of your concerns, your acupuncturist may also use traditional diagnostic methods as part of the assessment.

For internal concerns, this may include looking at your tongue and checking your pulses. These are common assessment tools in acupuncture and provide useful information about your overall health patterns. Please avoid brushing your tongue right before your appointment, as the coating can be helpful during the assessment.

For concerns involving muscles, joints, or tendons, you may be asked to move the affected area or complete a few orthopedic tests. These help identify which tissues or structures may be involved and guide treatment more precisely.

Your Treatment

After your assessment, your acupuncturist will explain the treatment approach and begin care. If acupuncture needles are used, they are very fine and most people find the treatment to be gentle and relaxing.

Depending on your needs, your treatment may also include other supportive therapies such as:

  • Acupressure
  • Cupping
  • Gua Sha
  • Gentle stretching or movement advice
  • Self-care recommendations between visits

Your treatment plan will be tailored to your individual concerns and overall health.

What to Wear

Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the areas being treated. Loose sleeves, pants that can roll up, or clothing that can be adjusted easily are usually best.

If needed, draping and privacy will always be respected during your appointment.

How to Prepare

To help you get the most out of your first visit:

  • Complete your intake form in advance if possible.
  • Eat something light before your appointment unless instructed otherwise.
  • Avoid heavy exercise immediately beforehand if it leaves you feeling overly tired
  • Bring a list of any medications or supplements you are taking
  • Arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in without feeling rushed

Questions Are Welcome

It is completely normal to have questions before your first acupuncture treatment. Your acupuncturist is happy to explain the process, answer your concerns, and help you feel at ease.

The goal of your first visit is not only to begin treatment, but also to create a clear understanding of your health and what support may be most helpful for you.
